Curbing the one eyed monster :: Four levels

Summary:
“CURBING THE ONE EYED MONSTER” by Fiona C. Jenkins has presented the disadvantages of the television showing how the television is destroying our time and creativeness. According to Fiona, Corporate Medias are controlled by comparatively few fabulously wealthy persons. These tycoons provide rich advertisements in television channels with too little truth. When a person get brainwashed and buys the product then he found himself being fooled because he finds the truth of the advertisement being totally covered by its bad sectors. Fiona also convinces all the readers by its bad sectors. Fiona also convinces all the readers to throw the television set away and strive to expose ourselves to the highest quality in art, music and literature. Fiona also request all the people to stop watching television instead develop habits to read books, talk to people, watch sunsets and travel. She seems to be highly influenced by the poem “GREAT SCOTT! GADZOOKS” because some lines of that poem has been presented at the end of the essay and this essay and that poem seems to be quite similar. Fiona also convinces readers to stop following other’s culture. As per her, we can be the master of our own brains. If we don’t watch television then advertisers will slowly and gradually stop watching fake advertisements. We should not be TV addict rather we should insert good qualities which will make our life reasonable.

Interpretation:
The writer of this essay may be trying to tell us that we should stop watching television, instead strive to expose ourselves to the highest quality in art, music and literature. Most of the televisions are owned by fabulously rich people. The tycoons show fake advertisements and totally brainwash people. So, to never watch television may be the moral of this essay. Writer may be trying to tell us that watching television continuously will lead the senses to rot, kill the imagination and makes mind dull. Watching those advertisements will not only brainwash us but also motivate those fake advertisers.

Critical thinking:
Despite of the positive message essay carries, I found some of the points of this essay really unconvincing, and can any normal person completely abandon television? Are all the advertisements on the television fake? Can’t we watch only some channels like news and sports? Do we have to stop watching TV at all? Are all the programs shown on television equally bad? Does television threatens a free society? Despite of these criticisms, this is really nice essay!

Assimilation:
Before going through this essay, I used to think that televisions are the appropriate source of information. Advertisements shown at the television would totally be positive to me. But, after going through the essay, I got to know that television was a threat and dangerous. It would brainwash people and force them to buy the products shown on advertisements. So, from now on, i will never watch television’s unnecessary programs. I am slowly trying to totally avoid the television and instead read books, travel and talk to friends!
